Types of exterior window shutters

There are many different types of exterior window shutters, as a company who specialise in wooden products we specialise in the supply of DIY wooden exterior panels made in solid Cedar.

Cedar

All our exterior panels are made of Cedar, this is a naturally oily material and used widely for roofing and cladding due its resistance to the elements.  The range of wooden panels can be found in a louvred or solid panelled design and can be used for decoration or operational purposes.

Standard Louvre

Our standard louvred panel is 38mm thick with 67mm wide top and bottom stiles.  The louvre is 52mm wide with the back edge being rounded and the front edge square which slightly overlaps the front of the panel.  They are made using mortise and tennon joints which are then dowelled through the front for added strength.  A small v groove surrounds the joints for looks.

Classic Louvre

Made in the same way as the standard louvre but with larger 67mm louvres cut flush at the back of the panel and a smooth finish to the joints (no v groove).

Raw louvre

A large exterior panel is available with 107mm louvres which protrude out from both the front and back of the panel.  The side stiles are 67mm thick

Venster panel

This provides a tongued and groove finish to the back with a surrounding panelled front.   The panelling is 16mm thick and stiles and rails 22mm thick providing a total panel thickness of 38mm.

Flat panel

A basic flat panelled solid shaker design.  The side stiles are 38 x 67mm with a 10mm thick centre panel.  Morticed and tennon joints re-enforced with dowels.

Shaped

Shaped wooden panels are available on all of the wooden exterior designs.  They can have a wooden insert panel at the top of the arch or louvres that curve around and match the shape.

Wooden options

•  Extended side stiles - Classic and Raw panel only
•  Middle rails  - all designs
•  Wide side stiles – not available on the Raw panel
•  Non see through louvres – Standard and Classic louvre
•  Finishes – Unfinished, Oil, paint.

Decorative

Any of the above exterior window shutters can be used for decorative purposes. Outside decorative shutter panels are normally screwed to the wall or fixed with shutter locks.  A plastic threaded bolt you can tap easily into the wall.

Plastic vinyl shutters

There are many types of plastic shutter available, these are durable and long lasting.  Generally made from a polypropylene UPVC with a built in UV prohibitor which provides a cost effective maintenance free shutter.  Generally used for decorative purposes.

UPVC shutters

Traditional louvred panels with board & batten style panels can all be made from UPVC plastic for non chip, a very affordable option.

Shutter hardware

Hinges

Various styles of shutter hardware can be used.   Strap hinges are very popular and can be flat or L shaped, these can be used with hinge pintels which attach to your wall and provide an upright shaft that the hinge swivels on.  Using a combination of different depths of pintels and cranked hinges you can adjust the style of window you can fit the exterior panels onto.

Decorative hinges

These are normally used on fixed panels to make them look as though they can open and close.  Fixed in the same way as a normal hinge though without the pintel or pivot.

Handles

These can be added as an extra as generally you can close the shutter panels from pulling at the bottom.  Pulls and handles can be added to help or to add to the design and overall appearance.

Locks

Most types of locks can be used on the panels, fitted on the inside of the panels so they can closed from inside the room.

Holdbacks

Various types of holdbacks including a hidden option can be used to hold the exterior window shutters back against the wall.
