Width/height

Width + Height - Recessed windows

Use the smallest width and height measurement when measuring inside the window recess for interior shutters.

The computer will then deduct 5mm clearance all round to aid with the fitting.  This is called the Shadow Gap.

Alternatively, you can enter the actual shutter size width if you do not want the computer to deduct any clearance.

Technical stuff

Recessed windows

Measure the width and height of your window inside the recess in three places across the bottom, middle and top of the window. Take the smallest measurement.

When ordering ‘Recess’ 10mm will be deducted from your window width and height to allow a 5mm shadow gap all round.

UPVC bay windows (Quick guide only)

Measure each individual section of your bay window using templates and enter this into the relevant L, C, R boxes on the form.

Double glazed bay windows will require you to use paper templates to ensure the correct width measurement is taken. (Call Sam Tel: 0844 858 4025 to discuss and upload photos).

Generally, battens are required to space the shutter frames away from the handles.  A small batten would measure 40mm deep.  An Elite shutter frame measures 50mm deep. So width measurements need to be taken 90mm away from the window frame.

Sash windows

If your window is set back into a recess (window reveal) then see ‘recessed windows’ above for measuring details.

If you have decorative architrave surrounding your window then measure in between the architrave.  The interior shutters will fit to the flat section of wood between the round bead (staff bead) fitted around the inside edge of your window and the architrave which is fitted around the outside edge.  You will still require a shadow gap between the shutter frame and the architrave. So order ‘Recess’ size.

Sams tips

Handles

If you have handles that protrude, measure the window width and height 50mm from in front of the handles, as this will be the final fitted position of the frame.

Tiles

When fitting in bathrooms or kitchens, the reveals are often tiled. Measure the distance between the tiles and use this as your width measurement as this will be the narrowest width.

B.T Points

Telephone/TV points are often fitted inside a window recess. These will need to be moved either by you or BT engineer. Follow the wire back outside the window and check if there is any slack on the cable which will allow you to pull some extra cable through the wall. If so, unscrew the face of the socket, unscrew the fixing screws and move the point to the outside of the recess, if possible. All this can be done without disconnecting any cables and don’t worry, you shouldn’t get an electric shock from either TV or Telephone sockets, but if in any doubt seek professional help! If there is no slack in the cable, you will need to get the sockets moved professionally.

Angles

Older houses can have angled window reveals. If there are no handles protruding, just measure at the smallest width where the angled wall meets the window frame.

Limitations

If your window height is over 1800mm high you will require a horizontal middle rail to strengthen the interior shutters and ensure they are guaranteed.
