Getting the right design advice on wooden window shutters is essential in achieving the right look. Sam’s background in design right through to fitting means he can offer expert advice.
Top opening
One of the most popular designs is a Top opening shutter. This works like a stable door, as the top half can open independently from the bottom half. Know in the trade as Tier on Tier, this suits windows that are taller than they are wide (Portrait style) and is very versatile. Typically, sliding sash windows suit a top opening style, as they are tall and narrow, modern UPVC double glazed window are generally wide and not very tall so not as suitable.
The most popular design usually includes a horizontal dividing rail matching a feature on the window. This option allows you to adjust the louvre blades either side of the rail for greater privacy.
If you’re looking for a little more privacy, but don’t fancy full height shutter panels, you can have them fitted to just the bottom half of your window. This option can also be called ‘Café Style’.
For wide openings such as Patio doors, French doors or room dividers, each shutter can be mounted on a track. These are now a very popular option, and can be opened from the centre, folded right back either side of the opening, or opened from the side and folded to the other side of the window. They can be ordered by-folded or sliding (so they slide one in front of each other to the left or right of the window).
Fitting wooden window shutters to a shaped window can look really impressive. Getting the design correct is important. For high up/hard to reach shaped windows, the remote control option can be used. For triangular windows, the panels can be folded in towards the centre of the room by using T Posts, or hinged downwards. Arched or curved shutters can fold outwards or be hinged downwards.
