Window Terms
- Recess/Reveal -The depth of space the window fits in
- Window Sill – Runs along the bottom of the window
- Mullion – A vertical structural section of the window frame
- Transom – A horizontal section of frame separating the top and bottom windows
UPVC windows
- Trim – A plastic bead that covers the gap between the window and wall
- Quadrant – A larger plastic trim that can run between the sill and window
- Silicone bead – A rubber silicone bead used by window fitters running between the window and wall to seal the window in place
- Sash windows
- Architrave – Decorative wooden frame surrounding the window frame, usually 3 sided sitting on the window sill
- Staff Bead – A removable rounded bead about 18mm wide that keeps the bottom sash in place
- Glazing bead – Divides the glass into sections or panels
- Meeting rails – The central point where the top and bottom windows meet
Shutter Terms
- Middle or Horizontal Rail – A division in the shutter used for strength and matching window features such as transom rails
- Shaped shutter – A curved, triangle or rounded shutter
- Tier on Tier – A style of shutter design meaning the shutters are cut in half like stable doors, allowing the top to open separately from the bottom
- Full height – A style of shutter design usually describing a rectangular style shutter
- Café – A style of shutter design where the top of shutters stop halfway up the window leaving the top free
- Shutter hinge – Attaches to the shutters to allow them to open and close
- Wrapping back – The shutters can be wrapped back around the wall so they do not stick out into the room Track mounted – Shutters that hang from a top track rather than hinged at the sides
Fitting Terms
- Batten – A piece of wood supplied in the same colour normally used to space the shutter frame away from large window handles
- Infill – Smaller pieces of wood used to cover small gaps
- Shadow gap – The clearance gap between the shutter frame and window recess
Technical
- Upload – Sending photos or data to the website
- Download – Receiving PDFs or data from the website
- Account – The online account that stores your order history, delivery details and contact information
- Deco Frame – A frame designed to fit on the wall surrounding the window
- L Frame – The normal frame designed to fit inside the recess of the window
- D mould – A rounded piece of wood attached to the front of the shutter stile covering the gap between two shutters
- Build outs – An extension batten fitted to frames to provide extra clearance from handles or protruding objects
- Rebate – When a section of material is removed from either a batten or stile
