Getting the right design advice on wooden window shutters is essential in achieving the right look. Sam’s background in design right through to fitting means he can offer expert advice on best designs for your windows. Here are the main key designs you can have with shutters: (Watch this video on plantation shutter design)
Full height
The most popular type of shutter design. A single panel from top to bottom with louvre blades running the full height of the shutter usually includes a horizontal dividing rail matching a feature on the window. This rail allows you to adjust the louvre blades either side of the rail for greater privacy.
Top opening
Top opening is a popular design. This works like a stable door, as the top half can open independently from the bottom half. Know in the trade as Tier on Tier shutters, this suits windows that are taller than they are wide (Portrait style) and is very versatile. Typically, sliding sash windows suit a top opening style, as they are tall and narrow and very popular in London.
Tpost
Tpost designs are great for wide windows like double glazed with opening windows each end. The tpost is an extra vertical post fitted within the shutter frame allowing the widths of the shutters to be matched to the window sections. They also make it very easy to open just one of the shutters, to open a side window for example.
Half height
If you’re looking for a little more privacy, but don’t fancy full height, you can have them fitted to just the bottom half of your window. This option can also be called ‘Café Style shutters’.
Track mounted
For wide openings such as Patio doors, French doors shutters or room dividers. Tracks can be opened from the centre, folded right back either side of the opening, or opened from the side and folded to the other side of the window. They can be ordered bi-folded or sliding (so they slide one in front of each other to the left or right of the window).
Shaped designs
Fitting wooden window shutters to a shaped window can look really impressive. Getting the design correct is important. For high up/hard to reach shaped windows, the remote control option can be used. For triangular windows, the panels can be folded in towards the centre of the room by using T-Posts, or hinged downwards. Arched or curved shutters can fold outwards or be hinged downwards.
The following shapes are available:
- Arched/angled Sunburst shutters
- Half round Double half round
- Elongated half round
- Eyebrow Circle
- Radiating circle
- Quarter round
- Oval Triangle shutters
- Hexagon
- Octagon
- Trapezoid
- Parallelogram
