Can I fit shutters outside the window reveal? 2017-05-26T09:44:13+00:00

You can fit shutters on the outside face of the wall.

This will allow the window to open and the shutters to fold back against the wall.

There is a shutter frame available called the Deco frame, this is more decorative and would be suitable or you can just fit the normal L frame to the outside of the reveal, depending on the design of the window.

If you have room, our recommended way of fitting is inside the recess.

Do I need a middle rail with a half height design? 2014-09-14T04:57:34+00:00

Limitations vary per shutter type, so please see the individual types for the size.

Folding shutters in bay windows? 2017-05-26T09:44:13+00:00

You will probably find it easier to look through the gallery at bay windows so you that you can see how shutters open.

Generally people keep their shutters closed and just open and close the louvres to let the light in so they don’t need to worry about where the shutters fold back too.

When you open the centre shutters on a bay window they would fold in front of the side windows when folded back.

Fixing a louvre blade 2017-05-26T09:44:15+00:00

Spare louvres can be ordered with your shutters or they can be ordered at a later date.

How much depth do u need to fit DIY shutters? 2014-09-14T05:03:45+00:00

Scraft shutters only:

For 47mm and 64mm louvres you will need a 46mm recess, this is the depth of a standard frame.

The large 89mm louvres require a medium 60mm shutter frame.

Make sure there are no handles protruding from the window.

If there are you might need to allow for battens or include rails on the shutter to ensure the louvres miss (Battens will increase the depth)

Its also possible to change any UPVC handles to a low profile design.

Can you have multiple bi-folds? 2014-09-14T05:04:08+00:00

Yes, in some shutter types it is possible to have multiple bi-folding shutters.

Some of the wooden shutters allow 4 shutters to be hinged one way or if you have shutters mounted on a track they can be hinged to all one side as the track supports the weight of the shutters.

There is a width limit of 1320mm for 3 or 4 bi-folding full height shutters fitted within standard frames.

Width limitations can be found on individual shutter type pages.

Do shutters block out much light? 2016-06-21T11:02:53+00:00

Shutters block out enough light to be used in bedrooms.

If you work nights and sleep during the day, we offer a blackout shutter option combining a blackout blind within the shutter frame.

Are shutters suitable for the bathroom? 2014-09-14T05:04:59+00:00

Yes, Vinyl and ABS plastic shutters are a waterproof shutter ideal for the bathroom, kitchen or wet room.

They look very similar to the wooden plantation shutters and have an extremely high quality matt finish.

The ABS shutters do come with wider side stiles, they are 50mm rather than the usual 40mm.

Vinyl shutters only take two weeks to order.

Tiles halfway up my recess? 2014-09-14T05:05:49+00:00

If you have tiles that go half way up your window reveal or if you have a dado rail protruding into the area that your shutters will fit into, there are a few options you can choose from.

  1. Measure the smallest width between the protruding items and fit a shutter with a larger shadow gap around.
  2. Customise your shutter frame by ordering a frame with a cut-out to match your protrusions.  This will add to the cost of the shutter, but the shutters will look more fitted.

Email me some photos and I can advise further.

Can you fit shutters to patio doors? 2014-09-14T05:06:13+00:00

Yes, you can easily fit shutters to patio doors or French doors.

Simply treat them as you would a window.  You may need to remove the skirting board around the inside of the reveal and order battens if you have a large handle that protrudes.

Email me some photos if you would like some advice.

What is the Shadow Gap 2017-05-26T09:44:15+00:00

The shadow gap is the secret to fitting shutters!

10mm clearance is deducted from your width and height measurments to ensure the frame fits within the recess, this provides a 5mm clearance gap or ‘shadow gap’ around the shutter frame.

The shadow acts like an infill and creates a neat finish between the wall frame:

This is important as normally recesses are not square or straight.

It is neater to leave a natural shadow than it is to fill the gap, generally filler will shrink and will not match the frame colour or wall colour, hence the natural shadow looks and provides a professional finish.

Sound proof shutters 2016-06-21T11:05:26+00:00

Our shutters are not designed as a sound proof solution, but they will naturally help reduce the noise in your room.

The best option would be the blackout shutter option, as the honeycomb internal blind will also provide some extra noise reduction.

Concertina shutters? 2014-09-14T05:07:24+00:00

Shutters that concertina are referred to as bi-folding shutters.

If you check out the page on Folding, it explains more about how shutter fold and how to describe them.

Generally concertina shutters come in pairs, so can also be referred to as LL (left/left) or RR (right/right) on the website.

Do shutters keep in the heat? 2014-09-14T05:07:41+00:00

Yes, shutters will help keep the heat in during the winter and keep the heat out during the summer.

Louvre blades are about 10mm thick so they provide good insulation.

Vinyl shutters are the best for insulation and our recommended shutter type.

Shutter doors only? 2014-09-14T05:08:17+00:00

It is possible to order shutters doors only without a frame.

You can order this via the order form by choosing ‘No Frame’ in the drop down menu.

Remember the louvres protrude from the back of the shutter panel, so make sure they will not hit anything.

Cleaning shutters 2016-06-21T11:00:28+00:00

Wooden shutters have a sprayed finished to them so I would be careful using mild detergents, normally a duster will be fine.

Plastic coated shutters like MDF and ABS can be wiped clean with a damp cloth.

Off set folding 2014-09-14T05:09:01+00:00

The off set folding option allows you to customise the width of each shutter to suit your window layout.

This can affect how the shutters fold back to the sides and in some cases might prevent the shutters folding right back to the side of the recess.

The off set folding option can be added to the order form or window guide from the optional extra section.

Do you supply s-craft or scraft shutters? 2014-09-14T05:09:18+00:00

Yes, I choose to supply S:Craft shutters as in my opinion they are currently the best shutters on the market and you can’t beat them for quality.

Are they energy efficient shutters? 2016-06-21T11:01:31+00:00

Shutters can assist in keeping heat in, helping to save energy and money, and can be more efficient than curtains or blinds as wood is an insulating material.

Once closed, the shutters form a solid barrier, heat is less likely to be lost from your home creating energy savings from your shutters.

During warmer months the louvres can be opened/tilted which also help reduce heat by keeping out direct sunlight, or ensuring it is angled away, to help maintain a steady temperature in your home.
