BULLNOSE Z FRAME
The Bullnose Z frame is a simple looking frame, that fits half inside the recess and half outside the recess, it frames the whole window like a picture frame or door architrave. There is a neat small overlap of 15.9mm excluding any fitting clearance. Its available in standard 46mm or a deep 60mm design, the deep version has the side fix insert option, so ideal to use with D1 fixings. The smaller frame does not have any fixing holes or inserts, so your free to install these how you wish, which is usually through the light stop. Just be aware of fixing close to the edge of the recess when using the small frame.
The Bullnose Z frame will allow shutter panels to be folded back around the wall, they are good for windows with shallow recesses, some inward opening style windows or if you have lovely views and really want the shutters to fold right back out of the way. They are also good if your window is out of square because the Z part of the frame covers any gaps if you have really large gaps you would need to consider the Crown Z as this has a very large overlap.
Remember, Z frames can make your room look smaller as they are fitted at the front of the recess so you lose the depth of your window sill. The default and recommended way of installing shutters is the inside recess L frame, so choose a Z frame wisely.
TECHNICAL INFORMATION
FIXING – Z frames can all be used with D1 fixings, in fact, we recommend using them as it stops any chance of the edges of the recess from crumbling or cracking. D1 fixings will make fitting Z frames much quicker and easier, and if you can use Tposts within the frame all the better. On large windows, you may still need a mechanical fixing, it really depends on the size and window type.
SHADOW TAPE – Using shadow tape around Z frames is a great way to stop unwanted light from uneven walls creeping around the edges, this will save using filler, making the frame much easier to remove if required.
FITTING CLEARANCE – The deduction required will depend on the squareness of the window, remember there is a 1.6mm size tolerance when ordering frames, so you need at least 2mm clearance to ensure the frame fits within your recess. We would recommend deducting 4mm on square windows and 6mm on out of square windows, this deduction should be made from the smallest sizes.
FRAME LOUVRE CLEARANCE – Here are the louvre clearance sizes for the different frames and main louvre sizes.
Small Z frames
- 64mm louvres = 1.8mm clearance
- 76mm = 4.2mm Protrusion
- 89mm louvres = 10.5mm Protrusion
Deep Z frames
- 64mm louvres = 15.5mm clearance
- 76mm = 9.8mm clearance
- 89mm louvres = 3mm clearance
